AOP CLAPE ET LANGUEDOC WINE
Situated in the heart of the Gulf of Lion, this area has a typically Mediterranean climate, nearly semi-arid with less than 500 mm of rain per year. Summer periods are marked by drought which requires the vegetation to adapt to face up to this shortage of water.
The La Clape mountain is characterised by high temperatures during the growing season of the vines.
However, the main determining, environmental factor for wine growing in the La Clape area is the water supply to the vines: depending on the depth of the underlying rock, but also the exposure of the slopes, the availability of water can vary a lot from one parcel to another.
Moreover, the area is swept by winds, mostly those from the North-West, called “cers” which favour the exceptional sunshine of this geographical area with more than 3000 hours of sunshine per year.
Finally, the vineyard benefits from a conserved environment and is situated in a mosaic of different locations: foothills, dales, marl-soil valleys, small plains formed in old depressions. The wine growing countryside nestles in the surrounding garrigues with dry, rocky landscapes or in copses of Aleppo pines, Stone pines and sometimes Eucalyptus. This geographical area is situated close to the Roman Road called the “Via Domitia” and allowed wine growing to go on here since the VIth century BC.
Initially, with the port of Narbonne, this area was essential to the production and the commerce of wines and was reinforced in the XVIIth century by the construction of the Canal du Midi.
Les phases de développement des voies de circulation maritimes et terrestres, et la proximité de la ville de Narbonne, ont profondément marqué le contexte local : les villages de l’aire géographique de « La Clape » sont tous situées en bordure du massif éponyme et la viticulture s’y est développée sur deux axes :
– de grands domaines historiques, dont les châteaux et demeures sont cernés par le vignoble, de taille importante par rapport à la viticulture locale dont plus d’un tiers dépassent 50 hectares de vignes. Ces domaines représentent plus de deux tiers des caves et domaines ce qui est unique dans la région. Des exploitations de taille plus petite, en cave particulière ou coopérative, le plus souvent constituées d’un parcellaire plus dispersé autour des villages. Tous ont fait le choix d’un encépagement adapté aux conditions du milieu et dont les qualités sont optimisées par des rendements limités, ce qui a permis, dès 1951, la reconnaissance en VDQS des vins de La Clape.
La récolte des raisins, la vinification, l’élaboration et l’élevage des vins sont assurés sur le territoire des communes suivantes du département de l’Aude : Armissan, Fleury d’Aude, Gruissan, Narbonne, Salles d’Aude, Vinassan.
Les vins rouges sont issus des cépages principaux suivants : grenache , mourvèdre , syrah ; Cépages accessoires : carignan , cinsaut. Les vins blancs sont issus des cépages principaux suivants: bourboulenc , clairette , grenache , marsanne , piquepoul , roussanne, vermentino ; Cépages accessoires : macabeu B, terret B, viognier B.
Le rendement est fixé à 42 hectolitres par hectare pour les vins rouges et 52 hectolitres par hectare pour les vins blancs.
LES ARBRES BLANCS AOP LANGUEDOC
This cuvée, Les Arbres Blancs is made from a selection of parcels bordering the garrigues and the olive orchards on the La Clape terroir.
Suggestions: as an accompaniment to grilled fish, white meats or fresh goat’s cheese.
ANNE DE ROUCH AOP TERRE DE LA CLAPE
Its intense ruby colour with purple glints and its dark chocolate, blackcurrant jam and cinnamon bouquet will surely surprise you. Its round, fullness on the palate is accompanied by fine tannins coming from ageing in selected casks watched over by our cellar master.
Suggestions: Lamb, daub, grilled entrecote steak, savoury tarts, strong cheeses.
L’INSULAIRE AOP TERRE LA CLAPE
This premium wine reveals an unusual character with its red fruit aromas and its silky tannins. Perfectly balances with spicy notes. This wine is rich with typically Mediterranean flavours.
Suggestions: Meat with sauce, game and hard-pressed cheeses.
